  7. Researchers in Brazil Develop New Packaging Material that Enhances Shelf Life by 200%

Another breakthrough has been achieved in the packaging industry. Brazilian nanotechnology firm, Nanox, has come out with a packaging material infused with silver-based nanoparticles that is being claimed to increase shelf life by 200%. The tests have been done for milk at the moment. However, the implications of this technology could be seen in packaging materials for different perishable items that have a limited shelf life.

Fresh whole milk has an average shelf life of 7 days. The silver-based nanoparticles provides bactericidal, antimicrobial and self-sterilizing properties to the conventional plastic packaging for milk. The addition of nano-particles almost doubled the shelf life of the milk from 7 days to 15 days. As of now, the new packaging material has not been brought out commercially.

It is being tested in two dairies in Brazil. Both of these dairies will use the new material while packing and distributing milk to check the efficiency of the material. If the results are good enough, then the material would be used commercially for milk as well as other perishable products. The US FDA has approved the material for use in food packaging. US and European markets should be the first ones to get this new material for perishable food items.

  10. How to Strengthen Corrugated Boxes

Corrugated boxes are strong and durable, but they can be strengthened further. Did you know that the strength of the corrugated packaging material comes from the size of the flutes that are created in it? These flutes or tunnel like structure determine the amount of weight that can be borne by it. But that is not the only way to strength corrugated boxes.

Corrugated boxes are widely used in shipping items from one place to another. They are also used as convenient storage containers What if you were to send heavy items or fragile items that needed extra protection? You would need to ensure that the walls of the box are durable enough to withstand the expected amount of force. The first thing that you need to do is to get boxes with appropriate flute type. There are single layer, double layer and triple layer options available (each with its own weight bearing limit). There is also a cardboard material with really large sized flutes which is capable of bearing heavy weight.

Once you have the right cardboard material with you, it
